‘If you can walk you can dance. If you can talk you can sing’ African proverb

Second Half.Still008

Many, many people do not know how to read music and yet they are still choir members. The reason for this is because it is not exactly necessary – it depends on the choir. As a Sing Your Rocks Off member, no former musical experience is needed. We learn songs by a tried and tested, ancient method. . .

Play it by ear

Traditional songs, folk songs, sea shanties etc. All songs that were learned off-by-heart, without ever seeing a lyric written down or any musical notation. These songs are passed down generation to generation.

We use the same approach in our choir – the choir leader sings a phrase, you sing it back. Repeat until it’s learned. The beauty of this method is that it’s amazing how learning a song in this way makes it stick in the memory! We might put lyrics up on the wall, but no formal musical notation experience is required.

As we say . . . .’You don’t need to read the music, just feel the music’

Feeling Good About It

Singing together gives everyone a great sense of community and camaraderie – we sing the songs we choose, that are relevant to our experiences, and it feels good.

Why not come along and see for yourself? – we run free taster sessions so you can get a feel for it – just let us know you’re potentially interested via the form on the right and we will get in touch. Or download the ‘would you like to know why men don’t join choirs’ free guide.
